Menare tuned to lust irrespective of whether they found the women next to themattractive or not, a study hassuggested. Men have for longbeen seen as judging women on looks alone, but a study has now shown that theincrease in male sex hormone level was not influenced by the perceivedattractiveness of thewomen. The research, publishedin the journal 'Hormones and Behaviour', suggested that the levels of theirtestosterone surged to the same extent whether they were talking to anattractive woman or someone they may not fancy atall.
The research involving 63male students aged 21 to 25 found that their testosterone levels increased by anaverage of around eight per cent after just 5 minutes exposure to a strangerfrom the opposite sex and in some cases to women they not find particularlyattractive. "We found atestosterone increase after only five minutes of exposure to a woman. Ourresults suggest that the increase in testosterone levels that we found, may bean automatic male response that activates receptors in organs and the nervoussystem to prepare the human body for mate attraction," said Leander van derMeij, who led the study at the University of Groningen inHolland. He said with the increase intestosterone levels males tend to display more dominantbehaviour. "They talk more withtheir hands, there is more eye contact, their posture is more upright, and theyare more likely to tell stories designed to impress the woman. We known thatwomen can be attracted by these kinds of things. All this, we believe, may befuelled by the rise in testosterone that we have found," said derMeij. Aggressive males showedgreater rise in testosterone levels, an idea supported by research that men whoexhibit more dominant-like behaviour tend to make more frequent successfulcontact with females.
